Pada jam manual terdapat jarum pendek yang menunjukkan satuan jam, jarum panjang yang menunjukkan satuan menit, dan jarum gerak menunjukkan satuan detik. Jam analog biasanya akan menampilkan deretan angka 1 hingga 12, atau ada juga yang hanya menampilkan angka 12, 3, 6, dan 9.
Pada jam analog terdapat tiga jarum jam yang digunakan untuk menunjuk waktu sebagai berikut : Jarum pendek digunakan untuk menunjukkan 'Jam' Jarum panjang digunakan untuk menunjukkan 'Menit' Jarum panjang halus digunakan untuk menunjukkan 'Detik'. Jarum 'Jam' berpindah pada setiap baris angka 1 hingga 12. Jarum berputar penuh (jam 1 hingga 12) sebanyak dua kali setiap hari. Sehingga 1 hari penuh dikatakan “24 Jam”.
